Make Newman's Your Own

It was a sad day when, on September 26, legendary actor Paul Newmanpassed away after a devastating bout with lung cancer. Newman was a marvel on the screen — he was nominated eight times for an Academy Award, winning once for The Color of Money, and he'll be forever remembered as the lovable rebel in films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kidand Cool Hand Luke. Perhaps even more amazing than his accomplished film career was his philanthropy. The actor oversaw over $250 million donated to charity through his brand of food products, Newman's Own, and routinely donated of his own personal funds to help needy individuals across the globe. Most of all, he demonstrated a spirit of personal responsibility that will serve as an example for a long time to come.

This weekend you can not only act on that responsibility but check out some of Newman's greatest on-screen achievements in the process, when the 2008 Fliff Can Film Festival hits Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). Starting today at 5:30 p.m. with Absence of Malice, you can catch eleven classic Paul Newman flicks for the low price of two cans of food or one new toy, to be donated to ChildNet and the Broward Partnership for the Homeless.
