Mark di Suvero’s modern sculpture, at home in the primeval

You’ve seen Heinz Award-Winner/International Sculpture Lifetime Achievement Award-Winner Mark di Suvero’s sculpture before. At FIU, outside of the Miami Fed, and in dozens and dozens of places across the USA — sometimes it’s so big, so of a piece with the urban landscapes surrounding it, that you figure it’s something dreamt up by the nearest building’s architect in a sudden frenzy of aesthetic inspiration. But it wasn’t: it was created by di Suvero, one of the 20th and 21st century’s most ambitious artists, whose abstract metal sculptures tower or crouch or hover above the ground, seeming to speak in a language only slightly beyond the comprehension of the viewer. And on the 6th, his work will be installed at The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (10901 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables), in a “monumental sculpture garden.” It really ought to be something special: the Garden, a massive site devoted to the preservation of tropical biodiversity, is breathtaking without any sculpture whatsoever. Tix cost $10-20. Call 305-667-1651 for more info, or visit www.fairchildgarden.org.
