Prime Cut Indie-Pop

Despite being active in the underground scene for over a decade, Of Montreal is best known for selling one of their songs to Outback Steakhouse. For years, every time you turned on the TV or radio, you could hear “Let’s Go Outback Tonight” played ad nauseam. These one-time darlings of psych-pop had become jingle-fodder for corporate America.

So it’s no wonder that lead singer Kevin Barnes and his Athens, Ga., band has since gotten more lyrically subversive. Their latest effort, Skeletal Lamping, is an epic sexual journey from the eyes of his alter ego, Georgie Fruit, a black transvestite. It’s a perfect fit for a live show that is half Ziggy, half Zappa, but completely original. And don’t worry, hipsters: After Barnes performed nude on a few tour stops this year, there is reason to believe that Outback’s CEO definitely won’t be attending. So skip the bloomin’ onion and see Of Montreal this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Revolution (200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets cost $17. Visit jointherevolution.net.
Sat., Dec. 6, 6:30 p.m., 2008
