My Yiddish Musical

Bring grandma back to her childhood.

So that giant, inflatable gnome you gave grandma for Chanukah didn't quite have the impact you hoped for. Make it up to your nana tonight by taking her to Those Were The Days. The musical song and dance performance will take her back to the Dirty '30s in New York City and the pre-Holocaust shtetls of Europe (little towns with a large Jewish population). Back then, Yiddish was the spoken language of many, so parts of the show are going to sound strange. But a projection screen with translations will help you follow along. Here are a few terms to practice in advance: tokhes means tushie, a shnorer is a mooch, and someone meshuge is crazy. Then there's vaklempt, the term Mike Myers brought to life. Hey - you and grandma finally will have something to talk about other than Maury!

Shows take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday and Sunday, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and 3 and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts' Amaturo Theater (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets cost $34.50. Call 954-462-0222, or visit browardcenter.org.
