Hometown Heroes

Finding cool local art, music, and film in South Florida is sort of like scrounging through vinyl at the local record store — the rare, soulful shit is definitely out there, provided you know which dusty bin to look in. Well, thanks to Auteur Explosion, a new monthly rocking the house tonight at 9:30 at Cinema Paradiso, that search just got infinitely easier. Explosion is a gathering of the hardest working purveyors of local arts, all assembled under one roof. There will be film aplenty, like the short offerings of SoFla director and screenwriter Alex Marquez, whose feature length mockumentary Film Contest? held a spot at the Palm Beach International Film Festival two years ago. You’ll get a dose of local comedy, courtesy of Richie Lala and Fort Lauderdale’s Viking Prince of dirty words, Matt Zigan. Copious tunes will be grooved to as well, thanks to musical guests Alex Nelson, Sosos, and The Dirty Boxes. And, of course, there will be local art from Luana and Robert and Amy Corrao to gaze at introspectively as you soak all the rest of the evening in. Even guest emcee, Robbio — he of the Grindhouse Deathmatch and Improv Export Co. at the now-defunct Mental Ward — will be in attendance, holding shit down alongside fellow hosts and filmmakers, Underlab Studios.

Head to Cinema Paradiso, located at 503 SE Sixth St. in Fort Lauderdale. Tix will run you just $5. Visit myspace.com/underlabstudios for more info.
