Hope (And Laughter) Springs Eternal

What will our joketellers amuse us with once the malapropism-spewing C-student we’ve had as our President for eight years is finally out the door? A general survey of the acts at the South Beach Comedy Festival, that began on Wednesday January 21 and ends Saturday with a cavalcade of stars, reveals there’s still plenty of material for future laughter.

Thursday night’s heroine, Lisa Lampanelli, is known for self-depreciating raunch; the night’s other act, Dave Barry, is bound to find enough local landmines to exploit during his performance. Friday night, Craig Robinson might not be as focused as he is on The Office — word is, he’s bringing a seven-piece funk band, The Nasty Delicious, into the equation. And what of Saturday night’s stars? Lewis Black has made a career out of voluble outrage, thanks to his “Back in Black” segments on The Daily Show. What could he possibly yell about, mere days after the inauguration? The economy? Middle Eastern conflicts? How wacky South Florida is? Joel McHale, celebrity satirist par excellence and host of E!'s The Soup, will also be in town. For a complete schedule, including showtimes and ticket prices, visit southbeachcomedyfestival.com.
