To Infinity and Beyond

Take a trek down the Science Tunnel at the SFSM

What if you could turn a short walk into a journey, with each step revealing more about the universe in which you dwell? How far would you go? How much would you desire to learn? The egg heads at the South Florida Science Museum must like you. They’ve brought in the Science Tunnel, a one-quarter mile interactive education covering everything under the cosmos.

The winding tunnel looks like something a villain from late-night science fiction programming would use to take over the world — a mental obstacle course for mass-data absorption. The “walls” are composed of videos, hands-on computer programs, and some of the most beautiful science photography to ever visit South Florida. There are 12 stations, each with a different theme. You’ll be coaxed in with curiosity about The Big Bang at station number one (which provides answers to brain benders like “Do hidden dimensions really exist?” and “Where does mass originate?”). If you make it to the end without your brain swelling to twice its original size, you’ll exit through tunnel number 12, which explores exotic topics like dark matter, and where our Universe might evolve from here.

If you’re interested in knowledge through immersion, and speaking geek fluently, visit the South Florida Science Museum at 4801 Dreher Trail North in West Palm Beach. Tickets for this exhibit, which runs through March 29, range from $10 to $15. Call 561-832-1988, or take a virtual tour at sfsm.org.
