“Faire” Ye Well

The Florida Renaissance Festival Returns

Maybe you’re used to seeing those strange characters the Florida Renaissance Festival attracts annually — rednecks who conjure up King Arthur accents, fairies with nose piercings, pirates wearing running shoes, and ladies in corsets so tight that their cleavage serves as a resting place for their beers. But this year’s fest will include other interesting elements. For starters, the Fair’s founder and producer Bobby Rodriguez said he is bringing back the themed weekends missing from last year’s event. In addition, opening day will also feature Albannach, a Scottish band, and a Roman Empire Encampment filled with costumed soldiers. (After all, the only thing sexier than a man in a kilt is a guy in a metal skirt.) This year, guests will also enjoy a new group of jousters in combat thrice daily. Grab a giant roasted turkey leg and a frothy mug of ale before making your way ΄round to encounter historical reenactments, sword fights, magical illusions, musical and comedy acts, and craftspeople at work.
