The Panthers are currently just two points out of a playoff spot, which is a classic case of good news/bad news for GM Jacques Martin. Obviously, the goal is to win the Stanley Cup this year, and the best way to do that is to go out and pick up a couple pieces (namely scoring forwards) to make a strong run toward the post season. The problem is Jay Bouwmeester. He’s one of the most talented young defensemen in hockey and he’s slated to be a free agent year’s end. Does Jacques roll the dice and try to keep him here, hoping to sign him after the season, or trade him away for something valuable now, ensuring he won’t bolt in the offseason, leaving the Cats holding the bag?

The Islanders will get to see Bouwmeester’s skills first hand tonight at 7:30 at the BankAtlantic Center. Show up at 1 Panther Parkway in Sunrise with $17 in hand and you too can play GM for a day and decide what to do with JB.
