Ya’ Crafty Bastard

If you’ve ever felt you couldn’t decide whether to call yourself an artist or a filmmaker, well stop deliberating. Take part in the second of a continuing series of varying themed workshops at the Girls’ Club in Fort Lauderdale. Film as Fine Art: 16mm Experimental Workshop led by experimental filmmaker and multimedia artist Dinorah de Jesús Rodriguez will be held Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Rodriguez’ 30-year career spans filmmaking, video art, moving image installation, and multimedia performance. There is no camera involved. This hands-on workshop will lead students through a film modification process which involves creating a hybrid between cinema and visual art. Using vintage film footage as a canvas, students will paint and scratch on found vintage celluloid film to create handcrafted images. A DVD of the completed work is available to all participants. “We seem to be filling a need for affordable, technical intensive workshops for practicing artists,” says Girls’ Club Director Michelle Weinberg. Bring a lunch and they provide the rest.

Find the Girls’ Club at 117 NE 2nd St. in Fort Lauderdale. The class is open to artists of all skill levels. The cost is $60. Visit girlsclubcollection.org.
