Head Spins: DJ Cee Pee

Kicking the soundtrack for America's Backyard.

DJ Cee Pee, the reigning head-spinner at America's Backyard in Fort Lauderdale, is as likely to limit his spins as the cow is to jump over the moon. See, Cee Pee provides the soundtrack in a place where the cross section of our nation truly gets good and crossed. A big tent, if you will, the kind of joint where the only restriction is being old enough to drink. And thus it goes that his sound must be — to use the dreaded term — truly open format.

More About

Born Chris Parker in Dallas, Texas, Cee Pee got his start handling the throngs at his local Baja Beach Club, part of the now-defunct nationwide chain of nightclubs for the masses. Then in 1990, the company opened a Coconut Grove outpost and transferred Cee Pee to head its team of party providers. He's been in South Florida ever since.

Two years at Baja Grove begat seven at Baja Lauderdale, and that in turn begat nearly a decade for the folks at Café Iguana, from Beach Place to the Grove to the Pines. Since both Baja and Iguana are basically indoor variations on Backyard's theme, it only made sense that Cee Pee would segue straight to America's opening.

But dates and places can say only so much about a DJ, no matter where he's holding court. And neither begins to describe the all-encompassing open ears mentioned above. "From current to oldies to country to rock," Cee Pee says of his spinning. "No emphasis. We play everything."

And "everything" includes David Guetta's "Love Is Gone" (AKA "the napkin song") and Flo Rida's "Round and Round" and Zac Brown Band's "Chicken Fried" as well as just about any song that cracks the Top 40. No, it's not South Beach. Then again, how many American backyards do you know that line up against the ocean?

DJ Cee Pee's Current Top Five:

1. "Don't Stop Believin'," Journey

2. "Love Is Gone," David Guetta

3. "Cupid Shuffle," Cupid

4. "Got Money," Lil Wayne

5. "Just Dance," Lady GaGa

DJ Cee Pee, Mig doesn't know what he's talking about. You are just one of the many things that makes America's Backyard so awesome. Where else can you get a DJ spinning Top 40 hits or hear cover bands in Fort Lauderdale? Actually, I guess you can get that at every other bar in the city. But where else do they throw that many napkins into the air? Thank goodness the Revolution got rid of their truly unique outdoor concert area so that we can all enjoy the cool sounds of Sweet Home Alabama for the 10 millionth time. DJ Cee Pee, don't ever change...I'm sure that you won't.

New Times, Did you seriously write an article on this guy??? DJ Cee Pee has to be the worst DJ I've ever heard at any bar/club/bar mitzvah. He might as well change his name to DJ Human Ipod Shuffle because that's pretty much what he is. I understand that the music format at America's Backyard encompasses all musical genres, with an emphasis on music heard at a 1990's American wedding (I had to chuckle to myself the other day when I heard Cotton Eyed Joe played, followed by Shout), but this guy doesn't even attempt to mix. One song comes to a complete stop, then another random song begins. He breaks every unwritten DJ law and he should be ashamed of himself. I'm not saying it doesn't work for ABY, rather, I'm saying that there is no need for the New Times, an otherwise credible newsletter, to highlight this guy in an article. Sincerely, Disappointed New Times Reader
