We’ll Be Summering in the Springs

When conjuring famous international art cities, many pop to mind: Milan, Miami, Paris, New York, Beijing, Coral Springs — wait, what was that last one?

It’s true. Coral Springs Museum of Art’s current exhibit features a collection by Romero Britto. A Miamian by way of Brazil, this pop purveyor has already shown at the Louvre — ya’ know, just down the hall from the Mona Lisa. He’s also created a collectible bottle for Absolut Vodka and built large-scale installations in places like London’s Hyde Park, all while running his own successful gallery in the 305. He’s a Basel staple.

Now through May 19, you can check out his merry patchwork masterpieces without searching for your passport or even coughing up gas money to Miami. How did it happen? We all have guesses: Maybe it was a stipulation Obama tucked in the bail out plan. Or perhaps Coral Springs is simply the new, burgeoning art capital of the US.

The Coral Springs Museum of Art is located at 2855 Coral Springs Drive. Tickets range $3 to $5; Wednesday afternoons are free. Call 954-340-5000, or visit csmart.org.
