Ve Have Vays of Making You Party

Promoter Steve Rullman has long been an integral part of the South Florida music scene thanks to his concert database and promotions network, The Honeycomb. But with his latest venture, Rullman is taking a more hands on approach to the bar business. It’s called Propaganda: a brand new escape for the proletariat of downtown Lake Worth that takes a slightly different approach to the dive bar milieu. “[Propaganda] is basically an indie rock dive bar and a small, intimate space for live music,” says Rullman. “It’s a place where we have the freedom to present live music any night of the week with a much more interesting aesthetic than your typical bar.”

The bar’s tagline is “music for the masses,” a sort of tongue-in-cheek play on the communist propaganda posters that line the interior of the room. But that doesn’t mean the tunes emanating from Propaganda’s dark interior are spun for mass appeal. On any given night, patrons at the bar can order up shots while listening to everything from The Ramones to Boards of Canada — all while a posterized picture of Lenin holding a vodka bottle looks down from above. Rullman and company already have some weekly events lined up too: Wednesday night is ladies night, where women can drink free and get their groove on to the sounds of DJ Spacerwoman (don’t worry guys, you still can get $2 Buds all night); Thursdays feature reggae and ska, with local units like Spread the Dub and Stampede scheduled to take the stage.

One of the things that drew Rullman to the project is Propaganda’s location — at 6 S. “J” St., the bar is smack in the middle of downtown Lake Worth. “Lake Worth is the last frontier of cool, downtown areas,” says Rullman. “It’s got a weird, funky, eclectic vibe that other downtowns in South Florida don’t have. There’s plenty of room for all kinds of cool things to happen.” For more info, call 561-547-7273, or visit propagandalw.com. photo by steev@thehoneycomb.com
