Good Luck, Chuck

Recently the New York-based flugelhorn player, Chuck Mangione, was in the news for the wrong reasons: when Continental Connection flight 3407 crashed into a Buffalo, NY home last February, two of his band members — saxophonist Gerry Niewood and guitarist Coleman Mellett — perished along with another 48 people. In response to the accident, Mangione wrote on his website that he is “grieving and praying with their families and friends.”

Mangione has been a well-recognized member of the smooth jazz scene since launching his solo career n the mid-1970s after a considerable period filling the trumpet seat with Art Blakley's Messengers. His best-known compositions are “Feels So Good” and “Children Of Sanchez,” the Grammy-awarded song he wrote for the 1979 Anthony Quinn vehicle of the same name. On his current tour, he is showcasing material from his recently released Friends and Love DVD, which showcases work from his entire career.

Check out Chuck this Friday at 8 p.m. at the Parker Playhouse, found at 707 NE 8th St. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $ 38.50. Call 954-462-0222, or visit parkerplayhouse.com.
