Yesterday’s Punk, Here and Now

Why be in a punk band in South Florida? “Why Not?" answers Robb Erwin, a member of the local thrash outfit the Dirty Boxes. "You always hear stories about how you should have been there, in New York or Detroit, but there are a lot of people that are talking about here and now. There is a lot of excitement in South Florida.” Erwin may sound a bit optimistic for a punk rock drummer, but he’s right. Why reminisce on the old days, when there is so much blood, sweat, and spit in the new?

Together with their good friends, the recently reunited the Ridgemonts, the four-piece is ready to make new memories. “We should dedicate our show to Ron Asheton (the Stooges) and Lux Interior from the Cramps,” said Erwin. It seems appropriate from a band that is so enamored by the sounds of 30 years ago. Punk music may be getting older, but the energy it produces never will.

Watch the Dirty Boxes and the Ridgemonts (at the band's first show in seven years) tear shit up at Respectable Street this Friday night at 8. Just plug in 518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach into your GPS. It’s free if you are old enough to drink, $5 otherwise. Call 561-832-9999, or visit respectablestreet.com.
