Running Down a Dream

It's not often that people seek bragging rights for being the quickest in bed. But tonight, at Delray Beach's 12th Annual Pineapple Grove Bed Race, 12 teams of hungry competitors will vie for the title of the fastest prone people around.

The annual festival started as part of a national bed racing tour, which sent winners from places all across the United States to compete in the finals in Hawaii. Since then, it's evolved into a festive street party that draws spectators to watch the titular race as well as a float parade that travels across Downtown Delray. Macy's Day ain't got nothing on these guys and gals: Each team will enter a themed float into the parade, where awards will be given for the best decorated bed. Some of the contestants this year include Blush Salon, who converting their bed into a hair studio complete with vanities and props, and Baby Boot Camp (a group of athletic moms who train their way into shape post pregnancy), who will rock a baby's crib theme. The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. in front of Bru's Room - but 6:30 is when the real race begins. The five-person teams will race their officially sanctioned twin beds up and down the street, stopping at stations to compete in obstacle course events before moving on. There will also be MCs calling the race, live music, prizes, and a block party going down in Pineapple Grove Arts District until 10 p.m.

Meet up at 35 NE Second Ave. in Delray Beach. The fest is free to attend. Call 561-279-1380, or visit pineapplegrove.org.
