Roger, Dodgers

Looks like the Dodgers have picked up where they left off last year, when Joe Torre — who’s chill even by the high standards of reanimated corpses — Left Coasted his new team past the World Series favorite Chicago Cubs in the first round of the playoffs. Granted, it helps a team’s cause when Manny Ramirez is being Manny Ramirez (plus Mark McGwire, plus Ted Williams, minus his usual batshit histrionics) and the uptight Cubs melt faster than a spilled Slurpee. L.A. lost to the eventual champion Phillies in five, but what the hey, they didn’t lose a home game in the first six weeks of this season. They score more runs than anyone else in the National League while holding opponents to the lowest batting average. They’re solid.

The Marlins, meanwhile, have cooled since their own torrid spring burst, but continue to hang with those selfsame Phillies atop the National League East. Jorge Cantu is among the league leaders in RBIs, Josh Johnson is pitching like the second coming of Randy Johnson, and the Marlins still do more with less money than anyone else in baseball. Plus, the good news for Marlins fans: L.A. only loses on the road. Get a possible playoff preview in the three-game series against L.A.: Friday at 7:10 p.m., Saturday at 6:10, and Sunday at 1:10 at Dolphin Stadium (2269 NW 199th St., Miami). Tickets start at $12, and while you can always walk up, you can also reserve them at florida.marlins.mlb.com or by calling 954-523-3309.
