He’s Got the Giggles

For years, Jimmy Fallon was known as that guy on SNL who constantly broke character by cracking up in the middle of his sketches. It became such a regular occurrence - Fallon cracking up during the famous “More Cowbell” sketch; Fallon setting off chains of laughter while trying to fold clothes in “Jeffrey’s” — that viewers at home could’ve made an excellent drinking game out of it. Most comments from the peanut gallery (read: the Internets) said it was because lil’ Jimmy - while a funny and charismatic guy - ain’t much of an actor. Fallon went on to prove as much with an ill-fated movie career punctuated by duds like Taxi and Fever Pitch.

Thankfully, Fallon recently moved on to a format where it’s perfectly acceptable to laugh at your own stupid jokes: late night talk. As the new host of NBC’s Late Night, Fallon has been as awkward as ever, only, this time, his combination of boyish goofiness and pothead giggliness has become slightly endearing. Sure, he’s no Conan O’Brien — but late night talk show host seems to be the one position in all of television where networks and audiences alike allow the talent a little time to bloom. After all, look at Jimmy Kimmel: if he’s still on the air, this Fallon guy should be a no-brainer.

Meanwhile, Fallon is stopping into the West Palm Beach Improv (550 S. Rosemary Ave. in West Palm Beach) for two stand-up shows this Saturday night at 7 and 9 p.m. See how much he laughs at himself in person for $38 a head, plus a two-drink minimum. Call 561-833-1812, or visit palmbeachimprov.com.
