Keeping Dance Kosher

“Brachot” is a Hebrew word that translates as “blessing,” and this is the main theme for the 13th edition of the annual Israeli Dance Festival, which celebrates its Bar Mitzvah in 2009. The numbers created for this year were mostly inspired by the 100th anniversary of Tel Aviv and also the 61 years since the establishment of the state of Israel.

In addition to about four hundred dancers from the JCC’s Bamachol Dance Academy and neighboring communities, the festival will also feature guest companies specially flown in from Israel, Mexico, Panama and Brazil. These troupes will showcase Jewish traditions from their own distinctive points of view — including Latin dance, a choir and even a South Florida-based hip-hop dance group. We'll leave it for the rabbi to decide whether this is Kosher or not — dance fans should consider this an event not to be missed.

The Israeli Dance Festival takes place at 7 p.m. at The Au-Rene Theater, 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $10-$50. Call 954-462-0222 or visit browardcenter.org.
