Bear Market Bruisers

With the economy in the toilet and job loss rates at an all time high, your hometown Florida Marlins seem to be perfectly built for our times. The Marlins have the lowest payroll in all of Major League Baseball, and yet are off to the best start in the entire league. Their usually inept defense is among the tops in the NL, their bats are beginning to hit their stride, and manager Fredi Gonzalez seems to be pushing all the right buttons. Most impressive, however, have been the Marlins young guns. With the youngest rotation in the National League, Florida’s starting five have been stifling opposing hitters from the go. And the bullpen, as evidenced by its recent 24-scoreless innings streak, has been lights out. Meanwhile, the Yankees just opened their $1.5 billion ballpark, boast the highest payroll at $200 million, and yet have the fattest ERA in all of baseball. The ragtag, low-priced Marlins have become the official ball club of the everyman.
