Espresso and Expression

South Florida native artist Hilda Vazquez is celebrating nearly 12 years of showing her work with her latest exhibit, “[ärt] n.”, opening Saturday at 8 p.m. at Undergrounds Coffeehaus. Hilda's paintings are heavily influenced by photography: she cites the photos of pioneers Julia Margaret Cameron and Man Ray as major influences. The contrast of dark and light, soft and sharp in their work can be found in Hilda's as well. She shoots photographs of friends, family, and complete strangers and uses the photographs as a staring point. "At the time it's being created, the work means something completely different to me than what the viewer may take away from it," Vazquez says.
