Love for the Locals

In a town where original music is the exception, Chrystal Hartigan’s Songwriter’s Showcase, held the third Tuesday of every month, is a respite from the endless rotation of cover bands playing “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Margaritaville,” and “Brown Eyed Girl.” This Tuesday’s showcase will run the oft-overlooked gamut of musical diversity in South Florida, featuring a medley of folk-blues, Latin rhythms and adult alternative. Miami band Dashboard Saints will deliver roots-rock jams that incorporate a Latin pulse and easy country. Contemplative and at times political folkie Marianne Flemming sings the “exasperated mom blues” and “whatever happened to our planet laments,” according to her website. And Ruling Mercury blends melodies and straightforward chord progressions for a not-so-strong cocktail of Top 40 alternative pop.

Support your local musicians Tuesday at 9 p.m. at the Abdo New River Room, part of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts found at 201 S.W. Fifth Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Admission costs $5. For more information, call 954-462-0222, or visit browardcenter.org.
Third Tuesday of every month, 9 p.m. Starts: July 21. Continues through Dec. 22, 2009
