The Truth Is Out There

Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is a stunningly beautiful movie with an equally engrossing premise: if intelligence governs the relationship between man and nature, what about man’s relationship with technology, and God? Its approach to that question is extraordinarily complex and nuanced, making it a prime candidate for lengthy discussion. And no where could you be better equipped to engage in that debate than at Cinema Verite, the monthly film series presented by CityChurch Fort Lauderdale that searches for, above all else, truth in cinema.

Monday night at 7 p.m., Cinema Verite will be screening 2001: A Space Odyssey, followed by vigorous debate on the film’s overt and covert spiritual messages. Expect to dive into questions like, “Is God present in the monolith?” and “Does knowledge really equal divinity?” Just resist the urge to wave any stray femur bones in the air when you think you’ve come up with an answer.

Find Cinema Paradiso at 503 SE Sixth St. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $5. Call 954-525-FILM, or visit myspace.com/vivalacinema.
