A Combo Supreme

Jazz combos helmed by a bass player have a solid track record: Charles Mingus, Charlie Haden, Dave Holland, and, if electric is your thing, Stanley Clarke. Maybe one day, 27-year-old local Diogo Brown will be added to that list.

He plays the electric bass and runs an outfit that fuses samba and bossa nova with jazz and funk. The sound ranges from hints of Charlie Parker to the Meters to Parliament, all while retaining a Brazilian influence courtesy of Brown’s native home, Rio de Janeiro (’70s jazz heads will definitely get a distinct Return to Forever vibe too).

Brown recently released his first album, Daqui pro Mundo (From Here to Around the World), and now he’s taking on the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Jazz at MoCA, the free outdoor concert held the last Friday of every month. See the current art exhibit, “Convention,” between 7 and 10 p.m., but make sure you’re under the stars when Brown begins shredding at 8.
