More About

The Miami quintet Ketchy Shuby takes its name from the song of the same name on Peter Tosh's Legalize It. And the band name as homage to the reggae legend makes perfect sense when you consider Ketchy Shuby's sound, a hybrid of Jamaican beats and psychedelic soul. The group's MySpace page name-checks everyone from the Wailers to Radiohead as influences, and this breadth is reflected in its songs. Guitars shift from quasi-staccato stabs to soft minimalism to straightforward melody while vocals float in and out, echoing slightly over slow conga beats. It's a swirly sound the group has dubbed "downtown soul," and with this experimentation, the group has avoided the repetitiveness that often plagues new reggae bands.
