One Sport to Rule Them All

The dawn of fall in America brings a cornucopia of emotions for the die-hard football fan. The titillation of gridiron season nears — the symphony of collision in a goal line stand, the despondency of a last-second field goal through your heart, the fiendish compulsion of a fantasy football run. These are all the things that make this the most American of sports. Society binds through the otherwise arbitrary dramas of a week-to-week saga. We high-five men we’ve never met before in bars. We sing along with strangers at the spark of a touchdown. We come together. Phins fans can feast on plenty of plot lines this year: Can the league cage the powerful Wildcat? Can Chad still hang? Will the Tuna begin to stink in his second year in the South Florida sun? Will anyone ever realize how good Channing Crowder really is, and how good Joey Porter really is not? Most importantly, how can Miami possibly follow up their unbelievable ’08 bounce back — when it seemed everything that could go right did? The Miami Dolphins play the Jacksonville Jaguars at 7:30 p.m. at Land Shark Stadium (2269 Dan Marino Blvd., Miami). Tickets cost $41 and up. Call 1-888-FINS-TIX, or visit miamidolphins.com.
