When he returned a year later, he asked a friend how Ruby was doing. The friend casually mentioned the dolphin had died, probably from the stress of moving from her former park to the new one in Mississippi. The news threw Brenner into a depression that lasted five years. Ruby, he's certain, was the love of his life.
In the years since, it has been a battle between Brenner's attraction for animals and his desire to be normal. He was married to his first wife for 12 years, to his second for six. Through it all, he says, "Zoophilia was my fantasy life. Some would make love to their wife and imagine Angelina Jolie. I fantasized I was a wolf having sex with another wolf."

In the mid-'90s, Hani Miletski decided to devote her doctoral dissertation to zoophilia and bestiality. She was a student at the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco, and Miletski was drawn to the subject not only because it seemed bizarre and fascinating but also because it had received scant attention from researchers. In particular, she noticed researchers had not accounted for the motives behind having sex with animals. Surely there's some common experience, something more reliable than the genetic lottery to explain how some people such as the ones above become attracted to animals. So she set out to find these motives.
Miletski tried several strategies, but the one that worked best was an ad for volunteers she placed in her local alternative weekly newspaper, the Baltimore City Paper. The first zoophile who contacted her told a zoophile friend. Soon they arranged for Miletski to meet the international "zoo" community that had already formed within a still-blossoming technology, the internet. Miletski had hoped to find a few zoophiles to speak openly about their attractions and conduct a case study. She was astonished to learn how many zoophiles there were and that they were so eager to have their mysterious, forbidden sexual proclivities given a scientific study. In all, she had 160 volunteers and accepted 93 — of whom 82 were men — into her study.
The study was more notable for what it did not find. The zoophiles had no similar childhood experience. Those who grew up in the country around animals were no more likely to become zoophiles than those who grew up in the city without them. They cut across race, geography, religion, and profession. "I could not find anything that says, 'All zoos are this way or that way,' " Miletski says. Having been unable to locate clues suggesting some other motive, Miletski concluded the single explanation for the behavior was the conscious one that zoophiles offered: It was an orientation they were born with.
"They really loved their animals," she said of the research subjects. "To the point that some want to marry them and treat them as spouses."
Miletski's findings not only formed her dissertation but also turned into a book, Understanding Bestiality and Zoophilia, which remains the most authoritative modern text on zoophilia.
When told of Senator Rich's remarks about people who commit bestiality being a threat to children, Miletski says, "I think it's real bullshit for people to say that. There's no connection that we know of. If you said that to zoos, they would be so offended." That's because Miletski says nearly all the zoophiles she interviewed expressed moral revulsion for sex with animals that had not fully matured. In this respect, she says, they recognize the same values that underlie laws against statutory rape.
Miletski and a researcher based in Germany, Andrea Beetz, who conducted a similarly large study, argue that zoophiles are distinguished by their emotional relationship to the animals they love. Because they care for them, they would never consciously inflict pain upon them, even for their own pleasure. A minority of them, Miletski allowed, treat their animals as a "masturbation machine" — but she says that for these zoos, it's the same as casual sex between humans.
Based on her interviews with zoos, Miletski suspects that animals consent to sex with human partners. But she concedes there is no sure way to know.
Ron, the zoophile from the western United States, points out that critics of his sexual practices "can't agree if animals are sentient or are dumb. They can't be both. If [animals] are sentient, [critics] would have to admit that animals can decide for themselves if they want intimacy when and where they choose." Ron believes this to be the case, as do the other zoos interviewed for this article. If animals are not sentient, he continues, "they don't know the difference, and what is it hurting?"
Zoophiles say they act upon the same nonverbal cues for sex as humans do. Brenner, the zoophile from Southwest Florida, asserts that humans having sex are acting on their own animal instincts. And if so, it's silly to deprive another animal of those instincts on the grounds that the animal has a less developed brain.
James, the zoophile I met on Second Life, puts it in even more vivid terms, asking whether he deserves to be imprisoned for raping an animal when he's merely allowing his Rottweiler to mount him.

I was just reading through the comments here and i have to say. I am someone who is truly open minded and i accept all. If you are sexual attracted to dogs then i think that's fine who is anyone to tell you what you can and cant like. I don't like sex of any kind and people look at me like i'm weird because i don't get sexual urges. You be who you want to be don't let anyone tell you its wrong. One thing that is wrong though is comparing bestiality to homosexuality. Its wrong because its implying that gays and animals are on the same level of respect and deserve the same rights. A homosexual is a person who can walk talk and speak their mind. A animal has most of these traits but cannot clearly communicate with humans so it is not a citizen it deserves no rights. There should always be a separation between things like sexual preferences and religion that's just like when the Mormons didn't want the Polygamist to call themselves Mormon Polygamist. When you take something and change certain things about it it becomes new like taking sex and then adding a person or a gender or an animal all different names each only related by one thing and that is the intercourse part. If people want equality then start your own movement don't try to horn in on the gay rights movement when they fought all these years ALONE to have the same rights as others. I support gay rights 200% and can see both sides of the story to pretty much any controversial issue. Except this one. I'm 17 years of age. And I recently found out that I am attracted to dogs. And it not being a phase. I am female and male dogs attract me. I would never want to hurt an animal. But there is pleasure involved for both. And it brings a relationship closer. And i like it. And it's shunned upon in some societies. Just as gay is. All societies are different. And most societies have made it where we don't have the right to be what we want without it being 'taboo'.

I’m sorry, but I am a Zoo myself, and would never dream of raping any animal, let alone my neighbours’ animals. I actually participate in an animal rescue service, and feel nothing but love and respect for animals. Specifically, I am attracted to one of my oldest dogs (she’s going grey, but certainly hasn’t lost any energy in her age). Consent does not always have to be verbal. There are many other signals besides verbal ‘OKs’. Another thing: I feel that I speak for a large portion of our community when I say that animals have too little rights now, but allowing a loving relationship to go on behind closed doors is far from ‘throw[ing] away all that progress’. Please do not insist that all we want to do is seek out and rape animals. That is far from the truth, degrading and discriminatory. We do not wish to do anyone any harm. I personally feel that threatening to mutilate someone who has not themselves caused anyone any harm is an extremely violent way to go, and that it may be just a bit more immoral than the act you are trying to punish. Lastly, having intercourse with a non-human animal is far from the same as engaging in paedophilia, given that the animal is of age to be sexually active itself. I am sorry for the long-winded comment, but I was deeply offended by the others and felt the need to let myself be heard.

The animal never consents so it is not voluntary, it is rape. It is not proper to force animals, or people, of any type into sexual slavery. If you go to these various sites you will find that many women get very creative when it comes to beastiality such as waiting for the dog to reach a state of arousal and the woman removing her panties and laying on all fours. You however can as you are an adult and of higher intelligence -- despite by beliefs to the contrary. Many children are coaxed into having sex and forced to behave in manners which they would not normally. Sex with an animal is rape, sex with a child or minor is rape, irregardless of the manner in which it was obtained.
Your reference to females engaging in animal sex acts and being creative only serves to show how far animal rapists will go to obtain their goals. The animal is not of age, the animal is incapable of making decisions about whom to have sex with at any age. The animal is either a victim of rape or molestation, and neither are appropriate in a civilized society.

cyberdreamlady,Why are you so arrogant? just becuase you know psychology, in the concentration of humans then you know that, with reshearch and everything available that we still do not know why people do what they do. Also Animals have a built in instinct, Humans domesticated animals yet, animals still have their primal urges, the same as humans do. as unsettled said, Sometimes animal hormones like human and every creature that god or whoever you believe in instilled in all of us sometimes our hormones and instinct to survive kicks in, another reason why there are so many species of dog, or any other animal due to interspecies relationships. If anything is immoral it's assuming that a sexually mature animal cannot make its own decision ivolving sexual intercourse. Now forcing any animal into a uncomfortable situation is wrong but I certainly believe that every animal should have the right to safe and wanted sexual intercourse. If you read my post carefully you would know that we have common ground and although I explained why I disagreed with your assertion on zoophilia I let it be known that I completely oppose animal abuse and suggested that all cases of zoophilia ought to be judged on a case by case basis because the fact is that there are plenty within that community who need to be hauled off to jail.
Yet, you failed to grasp that and instead chose to be defensive and hurl insults rather than consider my point of view. Your telling me that I need better education yet there's nothing in your reply that goes beyond basic common knowledge of which I and so many others already know about.
Yes, humans are more intelligent and capable of higher reasoning and yes, both animal and child behavior correlates strongly on the conditioning of exemplified adult human behavior. Exempting those who are completely out of touch with society that is a no-brainer. However everyone knows that no one needs to teach a baby that crying is the best way to get something they want. In the same way everyone knows that an animal doesn't need to be taught how to act on it's sexual nature. If an animal sees a mating call opportunity it will respond accordingly and there's no doubt about that.
My reference to the woman and her german shepherd elicits this perfectly. In her case she made herself available to the dog's sexual instincts and nothing more. In fact she was surprised at how quickly her dog reacted to her cues without her so much as even guiding him in any way. And as for the german shepherd penetrating the owner during sleep hours it doesn't negate the fact that the dog did try to do so on occasion. Now, you can blame the owner for all this but it would be no different than blaming a parent for their child's natural liking toward sweets. Because the fact is that nearly all kids like sweets and they don't need any training to grab that piece of candy bar on the table if a green light is given. On the other hand, controlling these urges can be affected through conditioning but that's a whole other point.
Again, be open and weigh the input of others carefully in regards to the issue at hand so that you may have a fuller understanding. This will also get you outside your own bubble and you'll realize that everyone is deserving of their two cents.

You should speak to what you know and not what you would like to be the truth or simply read online in some post. Unless this woman you refer to sleeps on her hands and knees I doubt there would be much of a chance for penetration during the night while she is asleep. If you had any knowledge of animal psychology you would not be arguing that animals are nothing like children. Conditioning and training are methods of teaching and animals want to please so they are compliant for the most part unless physical pain is involved. An animal does not possess the higher reasoning skills of a human, they do not evaluate all factors, they simply are not capable. A child does not possess the higher reasoning skills of an adult and does not take into consideration all factors. Get off this feed and educate yourself. I have wasted enough of my time trying to educate the ignorant and until you actually learn something of which you are attempting to speak of you should refrain from adding your 2 cents worth as it isn't worth one red cent.

@cyberdreamlady So the animal is never of age to decide? Should we just keep them all in zoos because they could never make decisions crucial to their survival? I think not. I know people like to think of animals being akin to little children but the truth is that humans and animals are different and there is a real tendency to underestimate them as if they have no idea what they're doing.
I for one realize that humans are more intelligent yet as creatures of survival and having much of the same basic instincts as humans do I don't leave the actions of animals entirely into the hands of human conditioning. Do we influence certain things they do? Yes but not everything. And sexual instincts in animals most of all have developed independent of human intervention.
I don't believe it is above a male dog of breeding age to figure out that that when a human female lays bare and mimics the sexual position of a female dog that he has been given an invite to do the business. An account from the same female zoophile I referred to also claimed that when she and her boyfriend shared the same bed her pet german shepherd would mount and penetrate her in the middle of the night while she was asleep! Is that type of behavior coerced? I don't think so.
Anything coerced or forced requires that there be a struggle or resistance of some sort given to the victimizer and children do this all the time when they are the victims of pedophilia. However they are threatened to remain silent or are physically subdued whenever they do resist. On the other hand the female zoophile with her german shepherd never even gave the slightest indication in her posts that any type of resistance was given by the dog during their sexual liasons. It even went so far that she had to train her dog the appropriate time and place to initiate sex because he was too aggressive! Does this sound like something a child victim of pedophilia would do towards an adult perpetrator? Not a chance. So I don't believe that beastiality in all it's forms and occurences should be regarded the same as child molestation because the evidence shows that this is not necessarily so 100% of the time.
I am however against any animal abuse where the animal suffers physical and emotional pain. This I can assure you. I used to think all cases of zoophilia were animal abuse but being exposed to more knowledge on the issue leads me to believe that this is not always so.
And for the record I am not a zoophile. I have absolutely no sexual attraction to any animal in any sort of way. I just wanted to engage on an interesting subject matter and give my two cents.
