Skin Is Out

You’ve spent hours in the chair listening to the buzz of the drill. Sometimes you fall asleep, sometimes you watch a movie. When it’s over, you thank the artist for leaving you with a piece of art tailored just for you. People with tattoos are like walking galleries for such artists, constantly advertising their creativity. But tattoo artists don’t only work with skin. They are painters, illustrators, and sculptors. Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery will celebrate these artists’ other passions with its “Off the Needle” exhibit Saturday. If you’ve gotten inked in the tri-county area, odds are your artist will be one of the exhibitors. Work from more than 25 artists located around Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach counties will be on display, like JR Linton from Hellcat Tattoo, Kreepy Jaksin from Kreepy Tiki Tattoos, and Lea Vendetta from Altered State Tattoo.

The opening reception for “Off the Needle” will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. at Bear and Bird, located at 4566 N. University Dr., Lauderhill. The event is free. “Off the Needle” runs through October 10. Call 954-748-0181, or visit bearandbird.com.
Sept. 5-Oct. 10, 7 p.m., 2009
