City Hall Turns into a Gallery

For the next month, the City Hall in Palm Beach will be decked out with the art of Rita Boutros. Her exhibit, "Prey and Other Works,” is a collection of paintings, pen and ink drawings spiced with pastel and acrylic, and other mixed media projects — some mind-bending. Growing is a canvas that has a sculpture jutting out of it. “It’s a sculpture that turns into a painting, or if you will, a painting that turns into a sculpture,” Boutros says.

From Egypt, Boutros immigrated with her family to the United States in 1957 and got her B.F.A. at Cooper Union in Manhattan, a highly prestigious art school. The highlight of the show is Prey, an illustrated book more than six years in the making that Boutros is hoping to get published. It will be laid out readably. Boutros’ message resonates in these times: "All of the works in this show focus on the idea of remaining… vulnerable and sensitive to the world around us. It is difficult to stay soft in a sometimes hard world.” The opening reception is tonight from 6 to 8. Admission is free. Find the City Hall Lobby at 10500 N. Military Trail in Palm Beach Gardens. The exhibit runs till October 21. Call 561-630-1100, or visit pbgfl.com.
Sept. 11-Oct. 21, 6 p.m., 2009
