Avoiding Bubble Trouble

In this economy, people are struggling to keep their homes and jobs, and businesses are closing. If people are investing, they’re doing so carefully and conservatively. So it may not have seemed especially prudent when promoters Garo Gallo and Yvonne Colon opened the Bubble four months ago. Outside of the rock-club trifecta of Respectable Street, Revolution, and Culture Room, taking a chance on a venue, even if it’s not technically a “club,” is risky. But Gallo and Colon didn’t do it for the money. In fact, they have a long history as community arts organizers dedicated to promoting South Florida’s creative base. Thus, giving underrepresented artists a platform was always the objective — which happily translated into some amazing parties. Now it’s our turn to give back. The Bubble (810 N.E. Fourth Ave., Fort Lauderdale) is holding a fundraiser Saturday to keep the spot kickin’ with good local music, local art, and a serious dose of DIY attitude. Peruse art by Coma Girl, whose work is still up from her show at the Bubble last weekend, or rock to bands like prog-punkers Dooms de Pop, Sweet Bronco, hardcore group Flees, singer/songwriter Alex Nelson, and more. Admission costs $10, $5 if you’re under 21. Call 954-562-3804, or visit independentworkingartistnetwork.com.
