Consider Fredi Fingered

If there were one word to describe the 2009 Florida Marlins — besides maybe “craptastico!” — it would be “implosion.” This was a team painfully close to a postseason berth, but the plethora of strikeouts, the horsecrap bullpen, and the two biggest stars getting into a verbal brouhaha in front of reporters pretty much guaranteed they’d stay home in October. Two weeks ago, against the hapless Nationals, Anibal Sanchez pitched six scoreless innings while Hanley Ramirez belted the one-hundredth home run of his young career. Good enough for a win? Not for the Amazing Imploding Fish! Enter Renyel Pinto. The reliever managed to load the bases and set the table for the Nationals’ eventual walk-off home run. A microcosm of the entire 2009 season, if you ask us.

The Fish will try to pick up the pieces when they host the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies this Tuesday at Land Shark Stadium (2269 Dan Marino Blvd). First pitch is at 4:10 p.m. Tickets start at $7. Call 1-877-MARLINS or visit florida.marlins.mlb.com.
Tue., Sept. 22, 4:10 p.m., 2009
