Flappers and Light-Hearted Shenanigans

No, No Nanette is a classic of the Roaring Twenties. It’s also a musical long associated with the so-called Curse of the Bambino. For years the rumor went that the original showing on Broadway had been bankrolled by selling Babe Ruth from the Red Sox to the Yankees, dooming the Red Sox to a world series losing streak until 2004. The truth is that the original, non-musical stage version of No, No Nannette was funded by the Babe Ruth sale, but the musical had nothing to do with it.

No, No Nanette is a romantic comedy full of tap-dancing and foibles. Nanette, a young lady malting into a ‘20s New Woman, a millionaire Bible publisher named Jimmy, and a cast of men and women will all converge on and become entangled in a cottage near Atlantic City. In the confusion and chaos that ensues, you can almost see a foreshadowing of the 1929 Crash. The musical packs two of the most famous show tunes: “I Want to Be Happy” and “ Tea for Two.” It’s sure to be a hootenanny. It shows at the Broward Stage Door Theatre (8036 W. Sample Road, Coral Springs) this afternoon at 2 and evening at 8. It runs through September 7. Tickets cost $33.25. Call 954-344-7765, or visit stagedoortheatre.com.
Wednesdays-Sundays, 2 & 8 p.m. Starts: Sept. 18. Continues through Sept. 28, 2009
