MasterMind Awards — Meet the Judges

New Times is awarding $4,000 to local artists.

New Times is excited to announce that we're giving away $1,000 apiece to four local artists as part of our newly established MasterMind Awards. Individuals can enter a variety of media — performance art, video/film/multimedia, visual art, fashion design — or nominate someone whose work they admire. Winners will be announced at our Artopia party November 14.

One of the judges on our MasterMinds panel is Janet Gold, whom we chose as Best Visual Artist of 2009 and described as "one of the most compelling presences on the South Florida art scene." Since winning that accolade, Gold has curated a small exhibition of works by Miami outsider artist Purvis Young at Broward Community College and continued to work as an instructor at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, where she teaches drawing and design. A practicing artist, she works in photography, oil pastel, and collage and has won the South Florida Cultural Consortium for Visual and Media Artists fellowship — twice. She is a member of the board for Broward County's Public Art and Design program and maintains a studio in Fort Lauderdale's Third Avenue Art District. In judging the MasterMind awards, she says, "I will look for brilliant technical skill in a variety of media."
