Art in Dutch

Scenic nature shots, in general, are beautiful because nature is beautiful: mountains, rivers, beach scenes, a rock, a lone lily pad floating on a still pond — all beautiful. But it’s just nature. Run it through the eye of Dutch artist Rolf Weijburg and you get prints from an inspired traveler who mixes history, culture, and nature into a single shot.

More About

Weijburg’s etched images of the Carribean and African islands are on display at the WM Gallery (6983 Stirling Rd. at Stirling Place, Davie). On his website, Weijburg talks about his art: His prints “tell stories by melding images and diagrams of the geography, animals, plants, architecture, and the people of the places I explore.” He sketches, takes photographs, and makes audio-recordings during his travels, and then back in Holland, Weijburg turns this material into etchings. This exhibit entitled "Islands of the Caribbean and Off the Coast of Africa by Rolf Weijburg” shows selected works from his book ‘L’ Afrigue Peripherique, a collection of 85 color etchings, plus his sketches, photographs, and some accompanying travel stories written in Dutch. For the non-Dutch speaking, we’ll stick to the pretty pictures: Nature shots shouldn’t get lost in translation.

This exhibit is free, and runs until October 10. Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 954-533-3974 or visit wmgallery.com. For more on Weijburg, visit weijburg.nl.
Mondays-Saturdays, 10 a.m. Starts: Sept. 28. Continues through Oct. 10, 2009
