She’s the Best Kind of Trouble

You don’t need to know opera to know the beautiful gypsy named Carmen or the eponymous tale based in 1830 Seville. The woman and her story have appeared on thousands of stages and in dozens of films since the 19th Century — and in many incarnations, from a saucy Dorothy Dandridge to a hip-hopping Beyoncé Knowles to the prettiest lady in the community college theater troupe. The legendary opera tells the tale of a free-loving dame whose hips cause hearts to burst and break. Around her, men are more foolish than usual, and then, of course, there’s the bloody murder. No matter how much you want the story’s ending to change, the Miami Lyric Opera will play the yarn as it was published in 1845. Try to find comfort in the fact that Carmen will live again for a moment this Saturday at the Colony Theatre. The show begins at 8 p.m., and tickets cost $30.
Sat., Sept. 26, 8 p.m., 2009
