Farewell Fiddle

Consider the recent popularity of tween sing-alongs like High School Musical and Glee, partnered with Hollywood’s inability to come up with an original idea, and it’s easy to imagine Fiddler on The Roof is due for a modern remake. A hip cast of young Jews like Jason Schwartzman or Scarlett Johansson could revive such a story with an iPod and the concrete atop their studio apartments.

The original 1964 Broadway show is considered such a timeless tale because its roots are firmly planted in tradition itself. It’s a musical about love, family, and faith in a constantly changing society. Not unlike the everyday struggle to accept new culture while clutching on to our own. Still, who could possibly replace the actor Chaim Topol, who has been playing the role of Tevye the milkman since 1967? Sacha Baron Cohen?

Well now may be your last chance to experience the classic Tony award winning show, as the Broward Center celebrates Fiddler’s “Farewell Tour” in a limited run through October 18. Today’s showtimes are at 2 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. Who knows? You may even spot Zach Braff taking notes in the Au-Rene Theater (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets range from $23 to $67. Visit browardcenter.org ,or call 954-462-0222.
Saturdays, 2 & 8 p.m.; Tuesdays-Fridays, Sundays. Starts: Oct. 10. Continues through Oct. 18, 2009
