The most famous film festivals conjure up images of cinema royalty gracing the red carpet and rubbing elbows with indie up-and-comers. By contrast, there are loads of festivals you’ve never heard of that take place in neighborhoods or remote farms around the world.

In its 24 years of existence (a millennium in these parts), the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival has built up its reputation from obscure event to a signature stop on the festival circut. This year continues the tradition of quality cinema and rockin’ afterparties with features like Black Dynamite, a satirical recreation of blaxploitation films; Queen to Play, starring Kevin Kline as an American ex-pat who becomes his housekeeper’s chess instructor; and The Who’s rock musical Quadrophenia, which pits mods and rockers against eachother in 1960s England (just like a night at The Poor House!). Hit the afterparty for Black Dynamite at Bova Prime, where director Scott Sanders and co-writer and starring actor Michael Jai White will promote the film, or meander through the motorcycle showcase before the Quadrophenia viewing.

The festival opens tonight with the romantic comedy, TiMER, in which romantic trysts go the way of the dodo as wrist implants allow people to calculate when they will meet their soul mates.
