I Dream in The Color Purple

Instead of catching a flight to see the bright lights of Broadway, a quick ride to Biscayne Boulevard can give you your theatre fix this season. If you think that that means the usual crackhead productions that go down on the daily, you’re mistaken — because the Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) and Broadway Across America want to turn your cultural calendar from a boring brown to The Color Purple. From Tuesday, October 27 to Sunday, November 1, catch the Tony award-winning play that was based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker, then tuned into a critically acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg and — perhaps the (cough) highest honor — produced by Oprah Winfrey.

If prestigious awards and an endorsement by one of the most influential women in the world don’t get your butt in the seat, then the incredible story will. Protagonist Celie is a woman who has beaten down by the world and the men she’s adored, but in the end finds her voice in a dramatic turnaround that can only be described as triumphant and well-deserved. Tonight’s show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets range from $25 to 75. Visit arshtcenter.org.
