Swell Films

You adore the feeling of having your feet planted firmly on the wax, riding a surfboard, and allowing a wave to cradle you as you slide toward the shore. It’s a feeling akin to flying. That is, flying with water spraying in your face and the threat of falling off of the 9-foot piece of fiberglass beneath your feet. When it comes to surfing, South Florida is no Barbados or Costa Rica, but when there’s a hurricane a-brewin’ off our coast you’ll undoubtedly find some pretty bitchin’ waves. And tonight, the Surfrider Foundation is bringing the balmy weather by way of two surf films, cult-fave Echo Beach and soon-to-be-legendary Spectacular Adventures. This wet double feature starts at 7 p.m. with organic grub and ’80s music to do The Swim to, with the films starting at 8 and 9:30, respectively. You’ll want to stick around for the entire evening because a totally tubular raffle drawing is sandwiched between the films, with prizes of surf and beach gear. Admission is $9 in advance (via brownpapertickets.com) and $10 at the door, with proceeds benefiting the local Surfrider chapter’s efforts to clean up local beaches. Visit surfrider.org.
