Artfully Unemployed

Art school isn’t the best choice if you want some semblance of security in your financial life. But if you’re a free spirit, bound only by the lines you draw outside of, security may be the code word for misery. You’ve got wings, dammit. Don’t trim them. Still, it’s nice, as a student, to have the security of a gallery in which to display your accomplishments. The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale’s Mark K. Wheeler Gallery provides that opportunity to its students and will be hosting an exhibit for the Institute’s art-school alums. Displayed art includes Lisa Hunt’s Owl, a work that seems straight out of some fantasy Alaskan wilderness with dreamy owls, earthy tones, and an enigmatic human face. Or check out Rei Ramirez’ Bono on Wood, a piece that incorporates reds and yellows to explore the mug of U2’s famous frontman – and purples for his famous shades. The Mark K. Wheeler Gallery is located at 1799 S.E. 17 St. in Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free. Call 954-308-2109.
Mondays-Saturdays, 8 a.m. Starts: Nov. 16. Continues through Dec. 5, 2009
