Changing of the Trees

No matter how much you love Jesus, Christmas will never feel quite right in South Florida. Sure, we’ve got global warming, palm trees, and bikinis…but we never get any reindeer. Every year the Festival of Trees tries to make up for lost seasons with a winter-wonderland exhibition of beautifully-decorated Christmas trees by local artists and businesses. This Friday, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale (1 East Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) will host the annual event, now in its 22nd year, with a display of more than 40 trees created by businesses such as island-lifestyle clothing line Tommy Bahama, or upscale Fort Lauderdale hair salon Robert Allen, which constructed an upside-down mirrored tree for the festivities. In addition, an elaborate gingerbread village will be on view and saxophonist Michael Kennedy will provide a jazzy ambiance while attendees sip on cocktails, bid on items from a silent auction, and grub on food provided by Chez Gourmet.
