Grandmas and Gangsters

Lost in Yonkers swept the Tony awards in 1991 and that year also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The Neil Simon play is a coming-of-age story set in New York. It’s a comedy, but it comes with serious drama and plenty of weighty characters.

The main characters, Arty and Jay, are two young brothers who have been shoveled off onto their grandma, aunts, and uncle. Their mother has died and the father is working as a traveling salesman to pay off debts. Grandma is not a kindly old lady who dotes on the boys with cookies and milk. Rather, she’s a rabid bulldog of a woman, and she’s managed to terrify and scar her two daughters, one of whom suffers from a psychosomatic breathing disorder. The boys’ uncle is a small-time gangster on the run. Its big-city family dysfunction at its finest.

Lost in Yonkers plays at 7:30 p.m. at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, 1001 E. Indiantown Road, in Jupiter. Tickets cost $39 to $56. Call 561-743-2666, or visit jupitertheatre.org.
