Alone with his acoustic guitar and harmonica, Big Poppa E is a mesmerizing performer. But the Miami-based bluesman can be equally captivating with a full band providing the colors and textures that allow him to explore his jazzier inclinations. Of course, it helps that Poppa possesses deeply soulful vocals and a repertoire that stretches from vintage blues by Robert Johnson and Willie Dixon to soul classics by Bill Withers. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that his E Band includes blues and jazz stalwarts such as guitarist and keyboardist Darrell Raines, bassist George Caldwell, and saxophonist Felipe Lamoglia. The group stretches out on tunes such as “Hard Times,” “Old Love,” and the quite affecting “Melonares Blues” on its debut recording, Live.
