Student-Teacher Shenanigans

According to Time, student-teacher sex, especially involving female teachers, is a “Florida epidemic.” Indeed, Google the phrase “student teacher Florida” and you’ll be met with enough reports on student-teacher sex to freeze a computer’s hard drive. Given all that, it seems questionable to stage the world debut of a play about a teacher who’s bound to two students by sexual tension and their mutual evasion of the law right here in Palm Beach County. But The Storytelling Ability of a Boy by Carter W. Lewis is actually a funny and charming if ribald play about a steamy female teacher, a precocious young writer, and his best friend, described as “a brooding young girl with a nail gun.” Their unconsummated quasi-love triangle in a small town of bovine-like monotony is entertaining and poetic but probably inappropriate for anything but a mature audience. At least that’s what this Puritan thinks, because — who knows? — maybe you’ll find Debra LaFave at a showing of this play. The Storytelling Ability of a Boy runs until January 17 at the Florida Stage (262 S. Ocean Blvd., Manalapan). The play shows today at 2 p.m. and again at 8. Call 561-585-3404, or visit floridastage.org. Tickets cost $45 to $48. Closed on New Year’s Day.
Tuesdays-Sundays, 2 & 8 p.m. Starts: Dec. 26. Continues through Jan. 17, 2009
