Culturespotting

There’s an old Haitian proverb: Ignorance doesn't kill you, but it makes you sweat a lot. So get culturally enlightened via the new Around the World in 80 Nights program at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE 6 St., Fort Lauderdale). This Tuesday, the first stop on this armchair world tour is Haiti with a presentation of the Haitian film Cousine by filmmaker Richard Senecal at 7 p.m. The film, which won awards for outstanding achievement at the 2006 Brooklyn International Film Festival, follows a young girl in Port-au-Prince who must fend for herself after she loses her father.

Before the film, immerse yourself in Creole culture with a 5:30 p.m reception that will showcase Haitian food as well as artwork by Haitian painter Eric Jean-Louis. Admission to both the film and reception is zero dollars, thanks to a Knight Foundation grant. Future stops on the Around the World in 80 Nights tour have been scheduled in Bangladesh, Turkey, and Guatemala. Call 954-525-3456, or visit FLIFF.com.
Tue., Jan. 5, 5:30 p.m., 2010
