“I’ll Be Broke for Christmas”

What happens when a bunch of embittered Capitol Hill staffers turn into singers and songwriters? The Maltz Jupiter Theatre (1001 E. Indiantown Road, Jupiter) gets serenaded with bipartisan political satire, that’s what. It’s a must-see show for anyone who wants to laugh at the withering away of democratic politics that we’ve witnessed in 2009. The Capitol Steps troupe will perform from its new album of Christmas carols called Barackin’ Around the Christmas Tree. When the Obamas sing in a duet “Everyone can have a health care plan/if they sneeze into their arm” and “It’s Oprah who’s in charge,” you can feel your own upwelling of holiday disaffection. Other cozy numbers crackling with the spirit of the season include “I’ll Be Broke for Christmas,” “Rudolph the H1N1 Reindeer,” “O Rahm O Rahm Emmanuel,” and odes to Sarah Palin, Twitter, the Town Hall meetings, and other augurs of the apocalypse. The Capitol Steps plays today at 5 p.m. and again at 8 and tomorrow at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $50 to $85. Call 561-743-2666, or visit jupitertheatre.com.
Thu., Dec. 31, 5 & 8 p.m.; Fri., Jan. 1, 5 p.m., 2009
