Jambalaya

Jam bands are invading South Florida this week (see Phish, Particle, EOTO, the Heavy Pets), and their minions are outnumbering our native scenesters as they swarm in bearing hula hoops, patchouli oil, hemp garb, and epic amounts of glow sticks. These, they throw aimlessly at one another during the Phish shows, then pick them up later to use as fashion accessories. And you know when they dance like electric noodles? They’re trying to channel a parallel universe in which the 1960s never die.

You’ll probably witness all this Friday when the Word brings its funk-filled jams to Culture Room (3045 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale). Made up of members of jam-rock band the North Mississippi Allstars; John Medeski from Medeski, Martin & Wood; and the inimitable Robert Randolph on pedal-steel guitar, the Word has reunited for three shows this year, the last of which is in Fort Lauderdale. Sure, Randolph is good stuff. We just suggest taking a shower — it creates a force field that’s impervious to hippies. Doors open at 8 p.m.; tickets cost $29.99. Call 954-564-1074, or visit cultureroom.net.
Fri., Jan. 1, 8 p.m., 2010
