Anthony's Runway in Fort Lauderdale Can't Be Bothered With the Nonmade Man

We stood in the hallway entrance of Anthony's Runway 84, all of us fuming over what had just happened. My wife was applying lip gloss in the bathroom and rehearsing how she would tell off the maître d'. My aunt and uncle figured we ought to just drop it, but I couldn't let this stand. I didn't catch the host's name, so we'll call him the Consigliere. He greeted me with his hand out as I got ready to unload on him.

More About

We should've figured our night would get to this point. Our capo, a jittery waiter named Guido, let us know early on with not-so-subtle hints that our field trip here would be a short one.

Anthony's has been around only since 1981, but its feel is decidedly old Fort Lauderdale, as in, the retirement community for New York wannabe wiseguys in need of a decent meatball. Owner Anthony Bruno is probably better-known now for his chain of pizza joints, Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza, where burning-hot ovens make fantastic well-done pies (read an article on the pizza joint on page 28). At Anthony's Runway 84, the walls of the hallway entrance are filled with years of semicelebrities appearing to leisurely enjoy their meal.

For us, Guido breezed through the specials and then rebuffed our attempt to order appetizers first. "I gotta get the whole order," he said in an accent that sounded a bit Italian, a little Brooklyn. When asked why, he offered: "The chef — if you put in the order in two, you will be here all night."

I asked if that meant we ought to rush. "Nobody's gonna rush you," Guido said, as if the Godfather himself had given us a pass.

He at least took our drink order first, a $36 bottle of Chianti from a relatively reasonable wine list. The temporary break from Guido gave us time to look around and wonder if the regulars were following this same no-appetizers-first rule. And there were certainly many regulars. They packed the bar off to the State Road 84 side of the dining room, back behind the full-sized replica of an airplane fuselage. A cartoony cutout of a plane completed the runway theme on the opposite side, and in between, tables were packed with diners and plates big enough to be considered elsewhere as family-sized servings.

Guido hung around as we considered our order, standing just off to the side near an empty table. He loomed stalker-like, close enough that he could probably hear our conversations. He dropped in every couple of minutes to see if we had decided.

Before we ordered, my uncle pointed to a nearby table where a woman had begun on what looked like perhaps a week's worth of food. "What is that mound of stuff?" he asked. We scanned the menu and figured it had to be the $29 "Italian Sunday feast," which typified a menu that features all the standard Marsalas and Parmesans.

My uncle and I had agreed to an arrangement that wouldn't break my expense account — he'd pay for the wine and I'd pick up the meal. When my uncle asked Guido about the separation, he wasn't going for it. "No, I will bring one check, and you will divide it," he declared. It seemed the Don had spoken.

We ordered — everything at once — and within minutes came hot, crusty Italian bread with Parmesan dipping sauce and simple house salads with a salami-slice decoration and garlicky dressing. A minute later came mussels marinara, which comes with the meals and, apparently, a bit of sand mixed in with a red sauce too sour for mussels.

For the appetizers, we ordered a special of grilled shrimp accompanied by a simple dice of tomatoes and garlic. The prawn-sized shrimp were perfectly cooked but effortless, flavored only from the grill. At $10 each shrimp, they were entirely too expensive. That's especially true compared to our second starter, a $10 plate the menu describes this way: "It's All About the Meatballs." It came with two soft meatballs almost as mild as the creamed ricotta that came on the side.

"My pet peeve," said my uncle, who had flown into town minutes earlier, "is when you've just taken a bite and then they come over and ask how it is. So far, our guy has passed the test."

As we ate, Guido maintained his spot nearby at the empty table, as if he were ready to take a bullet if an assassin approached. Luckily, I had sat with my back to the wall.

He left his watchman spot minutes later, returning with my Italian Sunday Feast, which was indeed a mound of food. It featured the same meatball from the appetizer, a rather chewy bracciola, a link of mild Italian sausage, and the star of the plate — a pork rib made tender from a day hanging out in gravy. That sauce, however, offered little more than the flavor of tomato paste on my rigatoni, which got a garnish of the creamy ricotta. The plate was enough for three meals, but I was glad we hadn't asked Guido about sharing — I'm just not sure what the Family would think.

What a great write up, absofrigginlutely the truth. I been here twice myself and this place is SOOOOO pretentious that it's ridiculous. I too had the misfortune of being waited on by Guido  he hovers over you like impending doom. Mussels sandy, their free so whatever they don't care. I actually got in at my reservation time at 8:00 which I was surprised. The thing is they know how people complain and it's the whole wannabe wiseguy thing. The food is hit and miss and the servise sucks, but it's the whole thing that is actually quite funny if you think about it. Thier all in this little microcosm of a restaurant and they get to act  like little wiseguys like it's  Joe Sonkins in the 60s and 70s where I used to work as a waiter going through school. NOW THAT PLACE was famous for Mafioso in S. Florida. Meyer Lansky, Gotii and a  bunch of others would go there.  But this place is a joke, fuhgettuhboutit.

It is always a special treat to go to Runway and each winter we go as many times as our waist line will allow. Anthony and son Anthony (FYI) who has the pizza restaurants are exceptional second and third generation restauranteurs and that is the reason they are always so busy. For those who haven't been to their restaurants, go, the food at Runway always plentiful and yummy and for a great gourmet pizza Anthony juniors restaurants are a must. This group must have hit it on a bad night - because even the most particur Italian clients love Runway....and my name is not Dan Marino. By the the way - the Calamari is excellent

About three and a half years ago I went to this place because it was highly recommended. The staff was horrible. We were basically told that we had to wait in the bar for our table even though we could see the table was empty when we arrived on time for our reservation. We were rushed from the moment we got to the table with the same kind of service mentioned in this review. The food was so unremarkable that I could not understand why the place had been recommended in the first place or how the owner could also own the pizza place that is so good. I believe that I could probably gone to the cafeteria at a nursing home and had better food than at this place and the crowd would have been about the same at a fraction of the cost. Overall it was a very disappointing end to what was to be a very joyous weekend of activities.

Average food served w/ an attitude that the public doesn`t deserve. To hell with the extended wait WITH a reservation. They are not worth the wait. To hell with them !

I'm not surprised. Runway 84 used to be one of my favorites, but because of the atmosphere - not the food. You feel like you took a time machine back to New Jersey circa 1982. People watching at the bar is great and the bar itself is a trip - retro and decorated like the interior of a plane. Unless you slip Vinnie (that's his name) at least a $20, despite any reservation you will wait..and wait..and wait. I think they take 40 reservations for 8:00 and then just sit people in the order of who complains the most. Guido is a complete tool. He waited on me once and I ordered a glass of pinot grigio and he brought chardonnay, then insisted it was indeed pinot grigio. Believe me, I can tell the difference between pinot grigio and a cheap oaky chardonnay. If you order wine by the glass don't bother with anything but house - they will give you house anyway. All the waiters fake their accents and the guy with the limp is faking that, too. By the way, you can ask to get soup instead of the mussels, even though no one mentions it. None of the desserts are even worth ordering; only the chocolate mousse is not totally horrible. And did you notice that the check is simply the handwritten order slip with the amount written on the bottom? If you want to see it itemized, forget it. All that being said, I still used to love to go sit in the bar for a martini, have some dinner, and soak up the kitsch. However, I will never, ever, ever go back. Why? Twice, it has happened that we paid at the bar with a credit card and left the tip in cash, and someone wrote in a tip of $5 on the credit card slip. I keep the original slips, and when compared, they were was clearly altered. If they do this enough times a night for $5, either people don't notice, or think it is not worth it to call them out, and they get away with it. The first time, I thought it was an anomaly, but the fact that it happened exactly the same both times is evidence enough for me that the are clearly dishonest. Sad.

Runway 84, the bar is great, good drinks friendly and competent bartenders. Vinnie the Maitre d is an arrogant twit. Peggy a waitress is perhaps one of the best we have encountered; she is a delight and always has a smile. We understand that to get a table you have to cross Vinnies palm with money, I refuse to do it so we dont eat in the dinning room. The veal chop is outstanding, the mussels amazing and the crusty bread superb. We would love to take out of town guests to Runway 84 for their food but we dont because you cant make a reservation and expect it to be honored. Vinnie the ruler of the house does a disservice to this fine restaurant. I am surprised that ownership has not realized that he hurts business.

it sounds like the food tasted pretty good.... when i copied, pasted and removed his "guidos" and "snipes" the article bascically said the food was good... what is better than naturally tasting grilled food that is cooked simply and with great bread and wonderful dipping sauce?

  • Rob 12/31/2009 5:59:00 PM

Why do people waste their time at this place. Unless your one of their "people" you het treated like a second class citizen no matter how much you spend. Go to Sette Bello, Casa D Angelo, Kitchenetta or LA Veranda. They are all great restaurants and they treat you very well. Screw Runway 84 and you can add Cafe Mortaranos to that same rude and nasty way of doing business.

We took our neighbors to Runway 84 a few months ago. Having been to the restaurant before, we thought it would be a nice evening of good food and fun. The owner of the restaurant actually lives in our neighborhood. It was a Saturday night, so I called to make reservations for a 9:00 seating. When we walked in about 8:55, there were about twenty people in line. I made my way to the mae d and told him, Vincenzo, that we had a 9:00 reservation. He said it would be a few minutes and asked that we have a drink at the bar. Having had our cocktails at home, we decided to just wait in the bar until called to our table. The bar was packed. Our neighbors were impressed with the crowd and the Art Deco design. We chatted for about 15 minutes and I realized with the crowd that the mae d might not be able to find us so I went back to the mae d stand to inquire about our table. There was a pretty young hostess there at that point and she said it would be another 10 or 15 minutes before our table was ready. I said we had a 9:00 reservation and she just repeated that it would be another 10 or 15 minutes. I went back and told my friends and they were visibly irked at the wait and I said I guess it is a very busy night, as evident by the crowd. One of my guest said she had been at many fine restaurants around the world, and it was not acceptable to have to wait 30 minutes after our reservations. We tried to pass the time with conversation, but all of us were aware that the wait was getting to be too long as it was now 9:45. The neighbors wife then took it upon herself to go to the mae d stand to complain about the wait. Unfortunately, she was not very diplomatic and to my great horror and surprise started using very profane language in her complaint and was very loud. The hostess basically ignored her, and my neighbor became even more upset and abusive. My neighbor and her husband went outside to wait and I stood at the mae d stand to try to make certain they did not give our table to someone else. Standing there, I spoke with a young couple who had witnessed my neighbors ranting and they said their reservations was for 8:30, but coming to eat here on a Saturday night you had to expect that your reservation would not get you a table anywhere near your appointed time. As I stood there I saw why. Groups of wise guys would come in and slip the mae d some bills to get a table. Looking at these guys, I knew they would just as soon shoot me as to say hello, so I realized that we were in for a long wait. Long story short, this went on for another hour or so. We tried to get our neighbors to leave and go some other place, but they were determined that they were going to get a table. Vincenzo started playing a game with her of promising a table and then never delivering. At this point we were offered free drinks at the bar and promised our table just as soon as a party finished. Finally, at about 10:30 they offered us a table in bar, but the neighbors refuse it and insisted on a table in the dining room. This became very embarrassing for me when the owner walked into the bar. Knowing him, I went over to say hi, but did not ask for any special favors as I was mortified by my neighbors use of vulgar language and the scenes she had created. Finally, at a little past 11:00 PM, more than two hours past our reservation time, my neighbors gave up, but not before one last scene at the mae d stand. Granted, my neighbors were jerks. I have never been out with anyone who was so abusive. However, Runway 84 is not worth of your time and trouble to eat there. The food is not that good, neither are the martinis. And it is certainly not worth the money they charge. But the worst is that they treat non wise guys and non-mafia types with little regard. My advice. Leave Runway 84 to the low class clientele they like and go to a good Italian restaurant where they are happy to seat you at a table and serve you a nice dinner for a reasonable price.

I have had a few experiences there myself. Once we were told to move out of seats at the bar while waiting for our reservation to be ready. We were told those were some regulars chairs... We thought that rude, the old guy we moved because of did buy us a round after some stared in his direction and some of us saying that was rude out loud. One final visit close to Christmas a few years ago turned out bad when we had reservations for 7 and we had to wait for an hour once we arrived. They then crammed all 7 people in a tiny round booth by the bar. We complained it was not a big enough table and were told that was what we get. the plates of food were crammed together. Wont go back to Runway 84. The pizza restaurants seem to be well run and taste good.

Good luck eating a feast like that in the summer when it's 95. Pity because that's when Anthony's will kiss your ass due to lack of business.

  • Kati 12/30/2009 3:30:00 AM

I agree with your comments 100%. It's a shame you blew $350 and can't say you walked away feeling it was well worth it. This place is totally over rated. They have been there a long time but bigger and better have come down. It might take a little longer but when the present old farts die off, maybe those of us who are left won't go and their doors will close. (hopefully)
