Animal Collective

If Food Inc. awakened your inner PETA member, catch the current exhibitions at the Coral Springs Museum of Art (2855 Coral Springs Drive) by artists who think of animals as muses and not as lunch. Hunt Slonem’s “Birds, Butterflies & Bunnies” runs through April 24. Slonem, known as “The Birdman,” paints images of birds that are recognized for their color and giddy sense of excess. After a childhood stint in Hawaii and a semester abroad in Nicaragua, where he played hooky to catch butterflies in the jungle, Slonem acquired a love for tropical fauna and has 70 pet birds at any one time. (He’s said to have two kitchens — one for cocktails and one for cockatoos.) His paintings have been bought by the Whitney, Guggenheim, and Smithsonian museums.

Whereas birds do it for Slonem, horses bring out the painter in Donna Long, whose “Survey of Recent Works” also shows at the museum through April 24. Long has a background in photography, having shot the Dalai Lama and other spiritual bigwigs while an artist in residence in New York City. She came to painting in her 60s and channels her love of horses into vibrant equine portraits. Tickets cost $10. Call 954-340-5000, or visit csmart.org.
