Parents Are a Drag

Like many a love story before and after it, the French play La Cage Aux Folles derives its plot from a “meet the (conservative) parents” scenario — only this time, it’s not the suitor whose lifestyle is a problem; it’s the suitor’s father. The father, Renato, manages a drag club and is dating one of the male performers to boot. So, when the two families get together for dinner, truth isn’t exactly the main course. If you’re suddenly reminded of Robin Williams, it’s because his 1996 movie Birdcage is a remake of the story. Or you just like hairy arms.

La Cage Aux Folles is onstage at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre (1001 E. Indiantown Road, Jupiter), where this Friday’s performance is preceded by a “pride soirée” from 6 to 7 p.m. in the lobby. The 7:30 p.m. performance is followed by a reception featuring cast members and KOOL 105.5 FM’s Tim Allan Walker. Tickets cost $48. Call 561-575-2223, or visit jupitertheatre.com.
Fri., Jan. 15, 6 p.m., 2010
